Transform Your Lawn in 3-4 weeks
First, it’s important to assess the condition of your lawn. Are there any bare patches, weeds, or thatch? If so, these issues need to be addressed before moving forward with the renovation process. This can be done through a process called scarification, which involves using a mechanical scarifier to remove moss, thatch, and debris from the lawn. Once this is done, we can move on to the next step.
The next step is to prepare the soil for the grass seed. This involves loosening the soil with an aerator. Aeration is the process of creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the roots of the grass. After the soil is prepared, I apply a mix of premium quality grass seed and pre-seed fertilizer.
The final step is watering, I recommend our customers water the surface 2-3 times per day for successful germination. After 3-4 weeks, the grass will be established enough for its first cut.
Lawn Renovation Process
1. lawn Assessment
I'll work with you to assess your lawn and determine the best course of action.
2. Weed & Moss Kill
I'll apply a weed and moss killer treatment two weeks prior to any scarification. During this time, moss will turn black and die off.
3. Scarification
Any debris on your existing lawn will be removed via vigorous scarification treatment.
4. Aeration
The soil will be aerated to improve drainage and allow nutrients to penetrate the soil more easily.
5. Over-seeding
I use high-quality seed that is appropriate for your lawn's conditions, and we will seed your lawn with the appropriate amount of seed to ensure optimal growth.
6. Top-Dressing
Top-dressing is used to level out some areas of your lawn that may have dips, and helps to improve seed germination.
What time of year is best to renovate a lawn?
Spring
Spring lawn renovations allows you to take advantage of the natural growth cycle of the grass, which means that the new grass will have plenty of time to establish itself before the summer heat.
Autumn
For Autumn lawn renovations, we aim to do it in September or early October. This will give your grass plenty of time to establish itself before the cold winter months.
Renovation Aftercare Guide
Initially, after seeding, you may need to water the lawn multiple times a day, typically about 2-3 times, especially in warmer or drier climates, to keep the soil consistently damp without causing pooling or runoff. As the seeds start to germinate and take root, you can gradually reduce the frequency of watering but increase the amount of water per session, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Always monitor the soil moisture and adjust the watering schedule as needed to support healthy seed germination and establishment. Once the grass has grown sufficiently, you can transition to a more standard watering routine based on the specific needs of the grass species and your local climate conditions.
After a lawn renovation and seeding, the timing for the first mowing depends on the growth of the grass. Generally, you should wait until the new grass reaches a height of about 3 to 4 inches before mowing for the first time. This typically takes around 3 to 4 weeks after seeding, but it can vary based on the grass species and local growing conditions.
When you do mow for the first time, set the mower blade to a high setting and ensure it’s sharp to prevent damaging the new grass. Ideally, you should only cut off about a third of the grass blade’s height during the first mow to avoid stressing the new growth.
Always assess the height of the grass and its overall health before mowing for the first time after renovation to ensure it’s ready for trimming.
