Lawn Renovation
A complete lawn restoration service to improve soil structure, eliminate moss and encourage stronger, healthier grass growth.
Is your lawn thin, patchy, or struggling to recover year after year?
SHM Garden Services’ Lawn Renovation service is designed to restore tired, moss-ridden lawns by tackling the root causes of poor growth – including thatch build-up, soil compaction, and nutrient-deficient ground.
Using professional-grade equipment and specialist lawn treatments, this process removes built-up moss and debris, improves drainage, and introduces new, hard-wearing grass varieties to create a thicker, healthier lawn that’s built to last.
Whether your lawn has become worn, uneven, or overwhelmed by moss, a full renovation can transform its appearance and performance within just a few weeks during the growing season.

Transform Your Lawn in as little as 3–4 Weeks
Every lawn renovation begins with a full assessment to identify underlying issues such as moss build-up, thatch, soil compaction, or poor drainage – all of which can prevent healthy grass growth.
The renovation process starts by mechanically scarifying the lawn to remove moss and organic debris that restrict airflow and root development. The soil is then aerated to relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone more effectively.
Once prepared, the lawn is overseeded using premium-quality grass seed, supported by a professional pre-seed fertiliser to encourage fast, even establishment.
With the correct aftercare, newly introduced grass typically begins establishing within 3–4 weeks during the growing season, restoring thickness, colour, and overall lawn health.
Professional lawn renovation process
1. lawn Assessment
Your lawn is fully assessed to identify underlying issues such as moss build-up, compaction, or poor drainage before renovation begins.
2. Weed & Moss Kill
A professional weed and moss treatment is applied in advance to eliminate unwanted growth prior to mechanical renovation.
3. Scarification
Power scarification removes moss, thatch, and surface debris to improve airflow and prepare the lawn for seeding.
4. Aeration
The soil is aerated to relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone.
5. Over-seeding
Premium grass seed is evenly applied to restore density and encourage strong, healthy turf growth.
6. Top-Dressing
A specialist top dressing is applied to improve seed-to-soil contact and support successful germination.
When is the best time to renovate a lawn in Scotland?
Spring
Spring is an ideal time for lawn renovation as soil temperatures begin to rise and grass naturally enters its active growth phase. Renovations carried out during this period allow new seed to establish before the stresses of summer.
Autumn
Autumn is widely considered the optimal time for lawn renovation. Warmer soil and increased moisture create ideal germination conditions, allowing new grass to establish strong root systems ahead of winter dormancy.
Lawn renovation aftercare & FAQ’s
It’s completely normal for your lawn to look uneven or patchy during the first few weeks of establishment.
Some areas may germinate faster than others depending on sunlight, moisture, and soil conditions.
You may also notice birds feeding on the surface – this is expected and usually does not affect overall establishment.
During the early stages, avoid heavy foot traffic and keep pets off the lawn where possible.
With correct watering and favourable weather conditions, you should begin to see consistent growth within 2–3 weeks.
Your lawn will continue to thicken and improve over the following months.
There’s no need to mow your lawn before your scheduled renovation.
As part of the preparation process, the lawn will be professionally cut down (scalped) prior to scarification. This allows moss, thatch, and surface debris to be more effectively removed during the renovation process.
Leaving the lawn as it is helps ensure the best possible preparation ahead of scarification, aeration, overseeding, and top-dressing.
Light foot traffic is acceptable where necessary for watering during the early stages of establishment.
However, it’s best to avoid walking on the lawn as much as possible until the new grass has begun to establish.
Children and pets should be kept off the lawn during this period to prevent disturbance to newly applied seed and top dressing.
Limiting traffic will help ensure even germination and allow the new grass to establish more successfully.
The best way to water your lawn after renovation is by using an oscillating sprinkler to ensure even coverage across the entire area.
Depending on the size of your lawn, you may need to water in zones by repositioning the sprinkler throughout the day. However, lawns under approximately 100m² can usually be watered effectively using a standard garden hose, provided care is taken to achieve even coverage.
Aim to water each section for approximately 15–20 minutes to keep the surface consistently damp during the early stages of establishment.
This approach helps prevent dry patches and encourages even germination across the lawn.
During the first 2–3 weeks, the goal is to keep the soil consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
New grass seed typically begins to germinate within 10–14 days following renovation.
In warmer soil temperatures, this may occur sooner – however, germination time can vary depending on weather conditions and how consistently watering instructions are followed.
During this period, it’s important to remain patient, as visible growth may take time to appear.
Provided the lawn is kept adequately watered, new grass should begin establishing gradually across the surface.
Once your new lawn has established and reached a suitable height, SHM Garden Services will carry out the first professional cut as part of the renovation service.
This ensures the new grass is cut correctly at the right time using sharp, properly adjusted equipment – helping to encourage stronger root development and promote thicker, healthier growth.
Carrying out the first cut professionally also reduces stress on the newly established grass and supports even development across the lawn.
Following the first professional cut, you’ll be provided with a simple aftercare guide outlining how to maintain your newly renovated lawn.
This includes advice on:
- Mowing at the correct height
- Gradually lowering your cutting level
- Watering during dry periods
- General early-stage lawn care
Once the lawn is fully established, ongoing maintenance can be carried out as normal using the guidance provided – helping you protect your investment and maintain a healthy, long-lasting finish.
Ongoing Lawn Care After Renovation
Once your lawn has fully established, ongoing seasonal treatments can help maintain density, improve colour, and reduce the return of moss or weeds over time.
SHM Garden Services offers a range of Lawn Care Programmes designed to support newly renovated lawns and maintain long-term health throughout the growing season.
